Why do recovering addicts shut off
or not respond during recovery
I wanted to ask my friends addicts about the reasons they would
shut off, or not respond during early recovery.
My addict and I have very supportive and loving (not sexual
right now) relationship, but he tends to shut off for weeks at a
time quite often. Even if I tell him supportive things and
sweetly ask to call when he can.
He is on antidepressants, but still....
I don't want to be depressed about it or beat myself up for no
reason, that would not be good for ether one of us. Just want to
understand, so I can be a better support when the need comes. |

One reason is, your moods suck. You have all
these feelings but want to ignore them all. You don't want to
think about Meth because then you get urges to use. I think you
are just overwhelmed and want to deal with it yourself, to do
whatever you can to get by. I guess it is a case by case
situation. For the most part, you just want to curl up in a ball
for a while. |

I totally agree on this
statement. Each deals with their own recovery in their own way.
My other 1/2 deals with his in this way. He shuts down, or
retracts into his own world. I think its part guilt, mixed
feelings, and just plain feeling. Which is most of the reasons
why we end up using anyway.. Right? I find men mostly find it
easier to just shut down and withdraw. Not to mention everything
else that goes along with quitting. body aches, nerves on major
FRAZZLE mode. Mind going crazy and just who and what do you
trust anymore.
Have patience, understanding and as hard as it may be at times
don't take it too personal. That's always been my mistake. Have
a good day. |

Re: Why do recovering addicts shut off

You know, for me at least, I did this because
I was horrified by the damage and destruction my addiction
caused, and I was having to face it head on.
There was no way around it. I was in the process of learning how
to own that I was the cause of the damage and destruction my
addiction did to my life.
I was having a hard enough time facing myself honestly....doing
so with the rest of the world was unthinkable at that time. |

We are BAKED... and we stay baked for a long time. Dopamine
is at an all time low along with our esteem and sense of self
worth.
The guilt, shame and remorse are nothing short of
overwhelming....as are the cravings and obsession to use.
It's common to simply go mute [and impotent] knowing that we
have little or nothing positive to contribute, and without a
tenacious approach to recovery we can remain stuck in anaerobic
mode indefinitely.
Just never forget 55...it's NOT your fault. Not even! |

Time....AND a daily devotion to recovery and
self discovery. |
