He says he's clean but refuses drug test
but refuses to take a hair follicle test to prove it. What's up with that? Is it an insult to question someone's sobriety?

To me yeah, cause that shows that their is no trust

that makes sense, but what if their behavior is suspicious?

How do you mean?
My mom knew when I was using and when I wasn't.
When I was using I was never home, didn't eat, fake sleep all the time, I was crying most of the time.

When I wasn't using, I was kind, happy, at home more often, and didn't look so sucked up!!!

Does he have my similar using symptoms??

he cries uncontrollably, threatens to call the police for silly reasons, continues to lie

I'm sorry, I'm not familiar with your situation.
How long has he been in recovery?
How long was he using prior to that?
If my husband asked me to take a drug test I guess I would be a little insulted because there is no suspicious behavior. I would still do it though. Same for him, he says.
We spent years on drugs. It goes to reason it should take years to earn the trust back.

Re: He says he's clean but refuses drug test
In the "system" a refusal to test is automatically a failed, or positive test.
Typically an addict who IS clean will jump through hoops of any nature to prove it, incl. drug testing, realizing that their loved ones do indeed DESERVE some loooong overdue reassurance. eh?
IMO you have EVERY right to "question someone's sobriety"
i.e. Trust IS earned.
By the same token, an addict who is NOT clean will *act* very indignant and offended at the suggestion of a test, conveniently forgetting the betrayal and deception already imposed upon their loved ones while assuming a posture of...
" how could you not believe me!"
Then, of course, the blame game begins...and before you know it it's YOUR FAULT we relapsed.
Sound familiar?
Sfj Re: He says he's clean but refuses drug test
It all depends on the length of clean time.
If he says he has been clean a month, I can see his point. I'd agree with him.
Because a hair test goes back three months or more.
May I ask why you chose a hair test instead of a urine test?
If he fails a urine test, he used within the last three or four days.

SFJ,
I don't think he is an everyday user, therefore he may easily pass a urine test and then continue to claim he is clean.

Re: He says he's clean but refuses drug test

If someone is clean and working a Program of Recovery, they shouldn't have a problem with taking a test. I've long heard this said in Recovery circles:
"refusal to take a drug test is the same as a dirty test."

I am sure that it does anger addicts to be tested and to feel un-trusted. But the sad truth is...drug addicts lie.
I did, when I was using.
I know others who have, too,...who have insisted on a stack of Bibles that they were clean, until the test proved otherwise.
Addicts lie.
Drug tests tell the truth.
Sometimes drug tests save lives, if the test prompts an intervention.

It may suck to feel distrusted, but it is important to remember that being distrusted is a consequence for having been untrustworthy while using.

Time spent sober, truth consistently told, and accountable behavior is what rebuilds trust.
While that trust is being rebuilt, the only way to guarantee knowing if an addict is sober, is to test them.

Re: He says he's clean but refuses drug test

It really bothers me when people come to this board and act like thay are clean when in deed they refuse to take a drug test!
They are only kidding themselves and the unfortunate people who believed that he/she is actually clean.
