Detecting drugs in infants

Detecting drugs in infants
My husband has a friend that is going through a bit of a 'trial'. His ex girlfriend is pregnant. She's gone back and forth telling him it's his kid and other times she says it's not. She's a bit unstable. Rumor is she's used drugs during her pregnancy. Hubby's friend says that if he can use that to get custody after birth, he will.

My question is, if she has used drugs at any time during her pregnancy, will the baby test positive? Does it have to be use right before birth? My brain thinks, ok she uses drugs, the drugs go to the baby, the baby obviously doesn't poop or pee it out yet, how does it get out of the baby's system?

Anyone that's had experience or knows anything about this, please respond. I'm going to talk to my doctor about it, but my appointment isn't until Monday.

It would be detectable in an infants blood/urine the same amount of time as the mother.

Aka, for meth, not very long.

Meth does pass through breast milk, as well.

But unborn children don't have urine, so would it be stored until the child's born and excretes it?

I'm speaking in terms of a mother using during earlier pregnancy and abstaining during later pregnancy.
Loraura Re: Detecting drugs in infants
No it's not stored for 9 months, it passes back out through the mom.

The umbilical cord delivers nutrients AND carries away waste.

Quote:
Blood is carried from the fetus along the umbilical cord and into the placenta. Here it is brought close to the mother's blood. Oxygen, nutrients, and antibodies from the mother diffuse into the fetal blood and waste materials from the fetus pass into the mother's blood, via the two un-oxygenated arteries. The fetal blood, which has been enriched with nutrients, oxygenated, and cleaned of waste, is then carried back to the fetus by the vein that carries oxygenated blood in the umbilical cord.

Gotcha. Thank you.

It's really sad, as I'm positive this man would make a much better custodial parent than the mother would at this point, but it's near impossible for a father to take custody of the child.

Moral of this story....if you're not willing to have a child with a person, don't have sex with them.

My son was born clean since I quit using around the end of my first trimester. Just to make sure they tested his urine when he was born. They put a little baggie over his weenie so that it would catch the urine when he felt the urge to go.

Re: Detecting drugs in infants
I used before I found out I was pregnant.

The dope showed in the placenta but not the baby.
They still wanted to take my Boo, but I refused to leave without her.

When my doctor who delivered her came in and I told him what the nurses wanted to do, he refused to sign the paperwork. I took my baby home.

I picked the doctor who had delivered my eldest, Thank God he was still in the business. I was HONEST with him about my use and DID NOT continue to use when I found out I was pregnant.

I was 6-8 weeks when I found out and I quit using.
