Can a Meth user quit cold turkey after 23 years?

khbird
I was wondering can a person if they went cold turkey, meth with out professional help, or rehab. In Jim's case he has been in rehab several times in the last 23 years. but he says he can put his mind to it and quit cold turkey. do you think it is possible?

I dunno -- can you stop breathing if you just put your mind to it to stop?

Technically...sure. Death has that effect.

I guess it would technically be possible. He would be completely miserable, and likely suicidal. But anything is possible.

Probable? Ummm no.

I'm sure he stops cold turkey every time he runs out.

Quitting isn't hard.

Staying quit, is hard.

Miracles do happen, anything is possible but in Jims case it's very unlikely he's going to do anything he says.
As addicts we "say" a lot of things that never materialize or get past the talking stage.
If he could quit with only sheer willpower alone, wouldn't he have done it by now?
23 years of meth and several rehabs later.... he's still delusional IMO.

"but he says he can..."

If we all had a dollar for every time we "swore off" we could pool our funds and buy Microsoft.

Interesting question. Why the rehab several times over the years if he has the power to quit cold turkey on his own? Seems like an awful lot of unnecessary time/money spent when he can just 'quit on his own'?

I watched people over the years go in and and out and in and out of rehab. It's a safe place for them to fall, to get themselves back to some semblance of health after a hard run. They pick up on the lingo quickly, and learn the 'right' things to say. They learn to work the system. They end up leaving rehab learning nothing except how to be a better con artist, only to return to their old ways. They cheat themselves out of true recovery.

If nothing changes, nothing changes. What does his track record show over the past 23 years?

Ooooohhh. The relapse would definitely be dangerous I would think should he fail at the cold turkey for long...Seems like after so many rehab tries, he is pretty damned good at conning his own mind. Hopefully he might just try another method of support to get clean and stay that way-one he hasn't tricked yet.

I would suggest professional help if it has been that long. Just my two cents.

....I WOULDN'T RECOMMEND IT TO MY WORST ENEMY!!!

Sincerely.

my opinion....i think im more likely to become president then for your budy to stay of the sh1t...he says he can put his "mind" to it....why hasnt he already.....he has to be incredibly physically dependant on it.....

I dont' know about any others so I'll speak only for MYSELF.

I was a slammer for over 23 years. And it was ultimately until I decided to quit that I stopped last year.

So I guess I don't really understand what you mean by cold turkey !

When I decided I was done I was done.

however I did choose a plan of recovery that made the road alot easier!
