Are meth users really happy?
After 3 weeks or so of hearing nothing form our daughter she called. She is still insisting we are all wrong about accusing her of meth use. We are the ones that have the attitude problem. Even though she is living in a near homeless situation she insists that she is happy but hurt because.we accused her.So yes is there any time during addiction that drugs really casuse a person to feel content and happy. She is avoiding everyone that loves her,but yet she will not take us up on any offers to help her get help.About every day I feel like sitting down and just bawling because of her situation, yes, I actually hurt for her. I pray everyday that the she will ask the Lord to just come into her life and bring her out of this darkness.
We don 't have an NarAnon is this area and I wish we did . Cause many times I would just like to talk to those that are going or have been through this..This forum though has been so helpful and I found it by accident..Come to think of it maybe not..Maybe it was not an accident at all. Many of you have responded to our situation and I am so Thankful..
She is still dening but I am hoping everyday that today she will tell us she is ready to get help.

Hello badsituation, You asked
*So yes is there any time during addiction that drugs really casuse a person to feel content and happy.*
I am so sorry to tell you that YES there are PLENTY of times that a using meth addict feels happy & contented.
Oftentimes, it is DIRECTLY after scoring a bag & doing the first of it.
The Happy & Content feeling lingers until the bag is almost empty.
I am glad too, that you have found us, but SO sorry about the tragic circumstances.
Keep coming here & you will gain tools & at the very least,
You will know that you are SO not alone.

Re: Are meth users really happy?
Meth causes the highest most intense release of dopamine known. Dopamine is the "feel good" chemical in our brains. So yes she probably feels pretty good when she is spun.
BUT..... because of this tremendous release of dopamine caused by meth the dopamine gets depleted and the receptors that receive it get damaged. One day meth won't be able to make her happy either.... nothing will.
Meth can make cutting the grass at a golf course with scissors fun.

I'm there with you. It's crazy but I have been where you are now until about 1 month ago. That is when my daughter was arrested. I still feel like bawling a lot but it's better now that I know where she is. I feel for you, my heart and hole my stomach feel for you. I know exactly what you are going through and my daughter said all of the same things that your daughter is telling you................... If you ever need to talk please feel free to send a message. I found this forum by what I thought was an accident too. No accident..........
God Bless as he has blessed my family

Re: Are meth users really happy?
It's just like anything else....
Some people have times of happiness in their miserable existence of being homeless.
Others have times of happiness in their miserable existence of being a suburban, uninspired robot.
Others have times of happiness in their miserable existence of being stuck in a job they hate.
Meth addicts have it too, just like you do and me. Some put a premium on happiness, whether it be real or synthetic happiness. Others don't put a premium on happiness, they put a premium on being right, or whatever.

Re: Are meth users really happy?
For me, meth gave me a self-confidence I had never felt before; it made me feel invincible and on top of the world; it made me feel bullet-proof. I had spent my childhood a defenseless victim at the hands of my mother's emotional and mental abuse - meth allowed me to escape the memories and the inclination to run and hide, rather than stand up and fight for myself.
But alas, it was just an illusion, and I found myself once again a slave, only this time, meth was my captor.

Re: Are meth users really happy?
We're damn happy till we run outta dopamine, and the drug stops working.
............................one thing that is NOT fun on any drug, is spackling, in my opinion.
I had alot of pictures and it left a galaxy of holes in the walls...many times......friends disappear...
...NOTHING helps that.

Re: Are meth users really happy?
So Let's Call A Spade A Spade - Meth Does What It Promises To Do
The sad truth is, even though meth is a temporary solution, and even though it's ultimately going to destroy you, many people today still see it as a way of solving a problem or addressing a need. Too much to do - too little time to do it in - not enough energy to keep up, low self-esteem, lack of confidence, a heightened libido - meth promises to fix all these problems. And let's be perfectly honest - in the beginning - it does!
So it is what it is - a fast, cheap, and artificial short-cut to what many people today want, or feel they absolutely need. And while awareness and prevention must be the spearheads of a drug strategy, we can't lose sight of the fact that meth addiction, like all addiction, is evidence of the systemic problems in society today. And until we educate people, teach them problem-solving and coping skills, and begin looking at their substance abuse problem holistically, we're always going to have a steady supply of meth addicts and addicts in general to deal with. You can't just treat the drug use - you have to treat someone's drug use within the context of their entire life and as a part of the entire constellation of their needs.

There are AlAnon and NarAnon meeting available online. Try a google search for either.

Re: Are meth users really happy?
Recently I asked my husband this. I said "Nobody thinks you'll ever stop because you love it so much." He said "I love it and I hate it too. That's addiction". I've seen him 10 mins after shooting meth and he did not look "happy" to me. I've seen him up for days on meth and he didn't look "happy" then either.
In fact --- when he's on meth he NEVER smiles. I've never seen anybody who was high on meth "smile". If you look at that website faces of meth -- in their mugshots they look so pitiful and empty. I've seen drunk people smiling in their mugshots. I've seen drunk people laugh and smile and appear "happy". Never seen anybody on meth act like that.
It's not a real "jovial" drug.

I've never really thought of it like that. Thanks.

Re: Are meth users really happy?
Plenty of people don't smile during orgasm.
Smiling is not always the best indicator of pleasure.
The way a person looks, or appears to another can be quite deceptive.

Re: Are meth users really happy?
2 big reasons for using are for pleasure and absence of pain...
For me to hide in my addiction I would neglect most of
my responsibilities.Which when focusing on finding/getting
and using. My stress level was lower..For a while anyway.
You hide from those in your life because you don't want to here the
bullshtt they have to hand out..It is bullshtt to you but caring
and concern from them..

Re: Are meth users really happy?
Meth makes (made) me feel pretty damn good.
"Happy"... I ain't all that sure what the word means.
I used to think that happiness had something to do with how nice my car was, where I got to vacation, how much money I had, how "important" my friends were, etc... and as a feeling it was measured by its "intensity".
I have always wished for happiness, but for some reason I have always run towards suffering...

Re: Are meth users really happy?
For many years I was extremely happy while I was on meth. I didn't stop being happy until my dopamine had gotten depleted so bad I could see just how bad things were around me.
When meth stopped causing the rush of dopamine to flood my brain I was able to see the destruction in my wake.

Re: Are meth users really happy?
Come on people ---- you can TELL when someone is "happy" or not. I can tell just by the look in their eyes.
I never -- EVER -- saw anything close to "happy" in my husband's eyes when he was using.
There's a differance in someone looking "high" --- and someone looking genuinely "happy" too.

Re: Are meth users really happy?
To KISFM,
The complexity of human emotions, abilities to cope, and even advanced defensive mechanisms we develop over a lifetime contribute to the notion that it is NOT always pssible to tell if someone is happy or not.
Many of us have learned the hard way that we can disguise our true feelings very easily if we practice.
People learn how to "appear" happy, jovial, and joyous when it serves them to do so.
The opposite is also possible.
