Functional meth addict
I just read the post the Functional Addict
and the dysfunctional addict. Can anyone explain more about the
functional addict. Is this meaning everyday use and assuming
no one knows what you are doing. My husband was / is using meth and
now I am staring to feel like he has switched to coke to be a
little more functional as it is less obvious. Can anyone relate? |

Re: Functional meth addict
Yes, functional addicts are much
more common than some people realize. Although, there are a few
hard core recovery folks who scoff at the the notion of
"functional."
A functional addict can use a limited amount on a regular basis
and maintain the appearance of a "normal" person. (normie)
But it is a very dangerous condition because the user has
discovered a way to prolong the use and temporarily prevent the
inevitable. |

Re: Functional meth addict
It means you work everyday.
....you don't look strung out, or ghoulish.
you pay your bills.
it actually compliments, enhances, and improves your life
at first.
I'm ADHD...
...when I first started using, it made me EFFECTIVE.
I was putting out poems and art like a prodigy.
...my house was organized and clean, I radiated health, and
sexuality....I was looking great, feeling great, my weight was
lower than it should be for a change......
....the world was moving, I was right there with it.
AND I WAS!!!
well...
like a new lover...
...it's hot and heavy at first,it LOVES you, it HAS you,
then it does'nt care about you, and uses you up.
....takes the best years of your life, you friends and family
hate it, you can't see it screwing you.
like a lava lamp it streches into other forms, and there's no
way to predict what shape it'll be in later.

I think this is what I am observing in the person I know.
How long they can keep it up, is just a wait and see thing.

I'm one of those hard core recovery folks, because for MANY
years I was one of those so called "Functional addicts."
I always worked in a professional capacity, at one point had a 3
bedroom home, a Fiat Spider for fun, a family car, a pickup
truck, and a Harley Davidson (For even more fun.) I had an
"Important" position at a State Hospital, lots of credit and
credit cards, kids did great in school, always fed, always
clean, always cared for.
I lost every bit of it because of meth.
10 years later, after re-establishing MOST of what I had lost, I
lost it all again - BECAUSE OF MY ADDICTION TO METH (Among other
things.)
I used before, during, and after work. I brought work home,
cleaned the house all night, then back to work again.
I HAD TO HAVE IT TO FUNCTION...and in my mind today, if you have
to have meth to function - YOU ARE NOT
FUNCTIONAL.
"Functional" people should be able to function WITHOUT having to
resort to drugs to do it.
I believe the functional addict just prolongs the inevitable -
meth addicts are going to crash and burn sooner or later (Most
of us, anyway.)
The "Functional" ones just drag it out longer and lose more as a
result. |

Re: Functional meth addict
OMG, I also had a 1979 Fiat (Fix
It Again Tony) 2000 Spyder, which did in fact live up to it's
name. I must have spent more money fixing it than what I
initially paid for it. Still, I loved that driving that car down
the coast in the summer with the top down. |

Re: Functional meth addict
Functional addict lol i find this
a joke people its speed this stuff makes you want to clean your
house what is dysfunctional about cleaning.
I use to goto work high wash dishes like a mad man then go home
and widdle a log down to a tooth pick repeat process untill you
crash and finaly burn.
To me the differance would be
Functional still in decent health
Difunctional "sigh" poor health |
